Most people spend a substantial amount of their income on their wardrobe, then wind up cramming clothing into their closets without a game plan. Keeping your closet organized by following all or some of these easy closet organization tips will pay off in saving time every time you go into the closet to search for something.
The first step requires taking a morning or afternoon where you don’t feel rushed to give yourself enough time to reorganize everything. As you remove everything from the closet, have a box or bag handy to eliminate all those items you haven’t worn within the past year, things that need repair or need cleaning or outdated items that should be tossed in order to free up more closet space.
Decide if you want to invest in plastic or wooden closet organizers, which includes cubes, rods or hanging shelves, in order to keep all like items together such as shoes, purses and shirts. Invest in padded hangers or hangers designed to allow multiple items to hang vertically on the clothing rod rather than horizontally to free up more space. Invest in hangers specially designed to hold ties and belts, slacks and accessories.
Organize your closet items by category, such as shirts, slacks, shoes, purses, ties and belts and accessories so you can quickly locate an item you are looking for. Within each category, arrange items by color as well as season. Take advantage of the inside of the closet door to add more storage space by hanging a tie or belt rack here or a shoe compartment. Floor space along the closet wall can be utilized to arrange pairs of shoes, sneakers and slippers. Just make sure they do not clutter the center of the closet floor where you need to step in to reach an item.
For winter items that need protection from moths, store in a cedar chest at the back of the closet. Storage chests are also good for storing items that are used infrequently. Time spent cleaning out and organizing closets in your home will save you time by making it easy to find and retrieve an item. Organized closets also help to keep your wardrobe lasting longer because items won’t be falling off hangers and tossed onto the floor getting dirty or crushed and wrinkled, making them not ready to wear when needed.
