Holy Moly, Landscape Lighting is Expensive!

I was so excited to see the landscape lighting guy!

We had just finished our landscape and our pool.  I love the way our yard turned out with all the trees, plants, planter beds, and beautiful flowers that are soon to come.  We spend a small fortune doing all the work and I thought we were done spending.  I was wrong!  I really want landscape lighting.  I live in Utah so the summers are pretty nice at night.  Without nice lighting it is hard to enjoy the yard and pool at night.  So I called a landscape lighting guy who turned out to be great except for the sticker shock.  My lighting system cost me another 10 grand.

At first I thought the guy was just trying to take advantage of me even thought he seemed super educated and smart.  After he left I decided to ask a few friends how much they had to pay for their outdoor lighting system.  Everyone I spoke to who has nice lighting that actually works said the same thing.  It is expensive!  In looking at the proposal and in speaking to the contractor I began to realize why a quality lighting system that actually works and lasts cost a little bit more than expected.

They are putting over 2000 feet of wire and several transformers.  Apparently the brightness of the lights is dependent on the wattage.  To have higher watt bulbs- just like in your house- you have to have more power run to the lights.  If I skimped on the wire and transformers they could put in the same number of lights but would have to make them half the wattage.  I want my yard to look nice and I want my lighting to be functional so I decided to just shell out the money.

I couldn’t be happier with the money I spent.  After I spent all the time and money making my yard the perfect yard I couldn’t imaging not having the ability to see and enjoy it at night.  There is nothing nicer than pulling up to your house at night and seeing a work of art.

I didn’t realize how much safer it would make me feel.  In fact, I didn’t even consider security when I did the landscape lighting.  The lighting gives me enough visibility that I could tell if someone was wondering around outside.  They would walk in front of a light even if they didn’t walk in the light.

I love my landscape lighting system!
