Proper Food Storage and Organization: Things that You Should Remember

Proper food storage and organization in fridges and freezers may vary according to the ergonomic design or the brand of the refrigeration system.  Still, you can improve food safety if you know how to manually arrange and store your fridge in the right shelf or compartment.  Let us face it – cheap refrigerators may come in lacking in terms of storage capacity and storage features – and if you have one, it is best to put proper food storage and organization into a higher priority.

If you learn to master how to store food products inside your refrigerator then you will be delighted to know that what seems like a compact refrigerator can store as much as a standard refrigerator unit can.  Here is what you can do to secure proper food placement:

  • Label food. This may be uncalled for if you have a compact refrigerator, but if you have a large-scale refrigerator then it is best to store your food inside a container or freezer bags label it with a freezer tape or a marker.
  • Watch out for temperature fluctuations. Temperature fluctuations can greatly affect the quality of the food products and may cost them to spoil easily.
  • Optimize storage features. Use glass shelves, compartments, wire shelves and freezer baskets the right way.
  • Put the food in the right compartment. In a standard refrigerator, there are only two basic compartments – the freezer and the refrigerator / fresh food compartment.  Frozen products like meat, poultry and dairy products should go inside the freezer and the rest can be stored in the fresh food compartment.
  • Use the right freezer packaging materials to store food. You should not store food products in ordinary plastic bags; you have to choose press-to-seal storage bags and freezer bags with zippered sliders that are durable and thicker.  Freezer packaging materials are moisture-controlled, leak-proof and resistant to odor transfers.
  • Avoid overfilling. It is understandable that you may want to store many food products inside your fridge, but you do not want to get in the way with the ideal cold air circulation inside the fridge.
