Vinyl Garden Fencing

My husband made a remark to me this weekend when I was explaining that we needed to do some painting. “What a waste of my life,” he said.

Personally, I enjoy some painting. I like seeing that fresh color go on the wall and the change it makes to a room. But I was talking about outside painting. Ok, I can like outside painting too. If it’s not hot outside, if the wind isn’t blowing, if no scraping or sweat is involved and if I’m not working where any bugs can get on me.

Which brings me to the reason  I now have a new vinyl garden fence.  No painting, no sweating, no bugs on me!

Actually, that’s not the complete reason. When I started my search for new garden fencing, I was amazed at the choices in styles and color offered in vinyl. Although it was pretty, I bypassed it at first because I wanted something sturdy and long lasting. I didn’t think I could possibly get that in plastic.  Boy was I wrong.

A clerk tried so hard to sell me on vinyl that I went home and did some research. Would you believe vinyl fencing first came on the market back in the 80’s? It certainly wasn’t the product it is now, but it has improved greatly over time.

Vinyl fencing is made of the same stuff PVC pipe is made of and is very hard and durable. It has to meet certain standards set by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) and when you buy vinyl fencing today, you are getting a quality product.

After I chose my fence, I found myself admiring the most beautiful garden arbour. I have always felt that arbours add so much charm to a garden.  It is now installed to one side of my main garden and it really expands my garden space. Guess what it’s made of? Vinyl, of course.

Installing vinyl fencing is a little different than installing other types of fences. The posts must be put deeper into the ground and they must be closer together. You have to be careful to use only the tools recommended in the instructions. Regular tools may damage the product. But if you carefully follow the instructions provided, it will be a breeze.

And if I do want (my husband) to paint my vinyl garden fence?  There is a spray paint on the market that is made especially for vinyl. It’s durable and comes in a huge range of colors. So you can paint it on a whim if you so desire.

If you are getting new fencing soon, I recommend you check out the vinyl. You will be glad you did.
