Every year, as the weather warms up, people across the United States start cleaning out the clutter they have managed to accumulate over the cold winter months. As they do, it is common to see yard sales and garage sales spring up every weekend. These sales are a great way for people to clean up and put some money in their pocket too. If you decide to have a sale of your own, there are some things that you can do to make things go smoothly and even increase your sales.
The first thing to remember is that nobody wants to buy broken junk. Sometimes there may be a temptation to put something out for sale “as is”, knowing that it does not work. If something has parts that hold their own value, this is fine, but remember that junk is junk. Don’t try to trick anyone. All this will do is aggravate people and you may even find yourself with unhappy people pounding on your door later in the day demanding a refund. It is not worth the trouble. If something is ready for the garbage, just go ahead and put it there.
Next, do not forget that organization is the key to a good garage sale. Having items separated into logical categories can make the shopping experience much more enjoyable and efficient for the people who come to call. This organization can be as simple as putting all of your clothing items on one table and other related items on tables of their own. If you don’t have tables, just use blankets that are spread out neatly on the ground. Shoppers who see these items being showcased together will be much more likely to pick up multiple items for purchase.
Finally, save yourself the trouble of marking individual prices. Unless something is truly valuable, mark all of the items on each table or blanket with one price. You can make one sign that tells visitors how much any item from a table will cost. If you want to offer special deals, like three for five dollars, just add that to the sign. People will appreciate the simplicity. Many people who visit garage sales do not even bother asking a price if they cannot find it on their own. They simply leave without making a purchase.
If you follow these few simple suggestions for organizing your garage sale, you will make the shoppers who find your sale feel much more comfortable while they browse. No one wants to spend their time trying to figure out how much things cost and making things convenient for customers only makes good sense.
